Digimon Card Game: a history of Bandai's modern TCG

Digimon has been on cardboard for a long time, but the game most collectors mean today is much younger. The current Digimon Card Game is a Bandai design that arrived in Japan in spring 2020, reached English-speaking players a year later and, since 2025, runs on a single release schedule around the world. This article follows that path, points out the sets that shaped it and describes what its collecting market looks like.

Before the modern game

The 2020 game was not Digimon's first card game, but it is a new game in its own right, not a continuation of the earlier ones.

A new card game for 2020

In January 2020, alongside the announcement of a new Digimon Adventure: anime series, Bandai revealed that a new Digimon card game was on the way for spring of that year. It arrived in Japan on 24 April 2020, when Bandai released its first starter decks. Bandai's own product page for Start Deck Gaia Red (ST-1) describes it as an aggressive deck built around Agumon and its evolution into WarGreymon, priced at 1,550 yen.

The core idea is familiar to anyone who knows the anime. Each player sends partner Digimon into the battle area, digivolves them into stronger forms and attacks the opponent's Security Area; a player who has lost all their security cards is open to the final, winning attack. Bandai's recommended way in is the same today as in 2020: start with a pre-built starter deck and improve it with booster packs.

The English launch

The English version was announced in 2020 for an early 2021 release. Before that, Bandai organised a "Super Pre-Sale" in selected game stores on 27 November 2020 across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe and Oceania. The pre-sale offered the three launch starter decks — Gaia Red, Cocytus Blue and Heaven's Yellow — and Release Special Booster Ver.1.0.

That first English booster was not a straight translation of a Japanese set. According to Bandai, Release Special Booster Ver.1.0 combined cards from the Japanese Booster Ver.1 to Ver.3 and featured seven of the DigiDestined; a second product, Ver.1.5, completed the collection. Bandai's product list gives 29 January 2021 as the English release date of the first three starter decks, and notes that release dates varied by region and channel.

For the next few years the English game followed the Japanese one at a distance, with its own schedule and, at times, its own product mix. That gap is the background to the biggest change in the game's history, covered below.

Sets that shaped the game

Classic Collection (EX-01)

Bandai called Classic Collection the game's first "theme booster". Its hook was nostalgia: classic illustrations from the Digimon Encyclopedia turned into playable cards. The English version reached Europe and Oceania on 10 December 2021 and the Americas on 21 January 2022, with 73 card types.

Digimon LIBERATOR (EX-07)

Digimon LIBERATOR is an original story created around the card game: a webcomic, later joined by light novels, set in a near-future immersive game where card battles take place in a metaverse. Its main characters, Shoto Kazama and Arisa Kinosaki, and their partner Digimon moved onto cardboard in the extra booster Digimon LIBERATOR, released on 13 September 2024. Bandai paired it with the starter decks Guardian Vortex (ST-18) and Fable Waltz (ST-19).

World Convergence (BT-21)

On 28 November 2024 Bandai announced a program to commemorate the "global unification" of the Digimon Card Game. The first product released at the same time in all languages was World Convergence (BT-21), released on 25 April 2025. The set gathers protagonists and partner Digimon from several anime series and introduced a "Link" rule for Appmon cards. For English players, it meant the end of waiting for Japanese sets to arrive months later.

The game today

Since unification, new sets arrive worldwide on the same schedule. In September 2026 Bandai released the booster Ignition of X (BT-27) together with two starter decks, and the official English site promotes the Digimon Card Game World Championship 26-27, with events across several regions. Curiosities

• English sets were remixes. Because Release Special Booster Ver.1.0 and Ver.1.5 split the first three Japanese boosters into two products, early English and Japanese collections do not line up set by set. That is worth knowing when you compare card lists or set codes across languages.
• Europe got some sets first. Classic Collection reached Europe and Oceania about six weeks before North America and Latin America.
• A story written for the game. Digimon LIBERATOR is one of the few cases where a card game's own storyline, told through comics and novels, drives a whole product line.

What the collecting market looks like

The Digimon Card Game has a layered rarity system. Booster sets list Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare and Secret Rare cards, and many sets add special cards and alternate-art versions of existing cards. Collector demand tends to concentrate on those scarcer versions and on popular Digimon and Tamers, while most common and uncommon cards are bought by players building decks.

A few things are specific to this game:

• Language and region. Before 2025, English and Japanese releases differed in timing and composition. Collectors often decide early whether they collect one language or both.
• Two kinds of demand. Cards that are strong in tournaments can rise and fall with the competitive scene, while alternate arts of fan-favourite characters depend more on collector interest.
• Sealed product. Booster boxes of 24 packs are the standard sealed item for most sets.
